Sell CBR Coupons Online

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tom_Hanston]Tom Hanston
As a website that sells coupons, you might also want to include the CBR coupon as part of your products. You will be surprised with just how many people actually want to have this availed. The reason is the benefits and the features that they can enjoy medically once they get into the blood registry.
The entire cord blood banking process happens only once-upon the birthing process. Once the mother gives birth, the specimen of the cord blood is obtained right from the infant's umbilical cord. Through the specialized banking facility, the cord blood specimen will be stored until it shall be used.
Cord blood registry has recently become a phenomenon. This is because the specimen that is obtained from this can be used for stem cell therapy as well as blood transfusion. So cancer patients can find that their cord blood specimen can be the key to actually saving their life. For this reason, people sought to find ways of getting the cord blood of their infant taken regardless of the expenses.
So if you happen to know an institution that actually offers the cord blood banking procedure, you might want to talk them into getting coupons. If they have current promos and discount packages offered for those who want to get into their registry, they can use your coupon facility as a means of marketing their services.
Most of these cord blood banking facilities are probably unknown to people. But soon as the CBR coupons hit the internet and get circulated, people would start paying more attention to what these facilities can do. As such, it would entice people to know more about them and motivate new registrants immediately.
However, you should just remember to consider your partners wisely. Make sure that you only partner with those institutions that are considered legal and have been practicing in the field for quite some time now. Do your own research as well.
As soon as you get down to creating the coupon, make sure that you cover features that the facility is willing to shoulder. You should also influence them to make a few more sweeter moves to make their CBR coupon more enticing to customers.
Another important thing to consider is the validity of the CBR coupon. Ask the blood banking facility if they can hold on to the coupon campaign for a year. Besides, you would agree to cap the number of coupons anyway to still make sure that it fits their business plans. You should also try to suggest that they make the coupons transferrable.

How to Get a CBR Discount

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tom_Hanston]Tom Hanston
Getting a CBR discount is what most people especially expecting parents want to do these days. If you are one, you probably have heard of the whole cord blood registry thing. Its effects have indeed inspired a lot of people to try to get one at all costs.
But where can you really find this? Among the most popular way to do so these days is to get a coupon. Even websites online have picked up on the popularity that a CBR coupon brings. As a result they have decided to partner with several cord blood banking institutions to be able to provide this for customers.
Just make sure you take extra care when getting a CBR discount. Make sure that you are getting it from a legitimate coupon site. You might want to research first regarding the site's credibility just so you can be on the safe side. You should also take the time to consider other people's advice regarding the said coupon. If you are currently eyeing a cord blood banking facility, compare the price offered there from the discount being offered by the coupon.
Aside from relying on these coupons, you can also try your luck with a discount through referrals. Your gynaecologist would most probably know of cord blood banking and they might know some experts who can tend to your request. It would be best if your gynaecologist would be able to do the procedure himself. Because of the number of services you will get from him, he might offer to give you a CBR discount.
You can also get a CBR discount from referrals. This is among the marketing strategies being employed by most cord blood banking institutions. Take advantage of referrals by also asking from among your friends about cord blood banking. They would know about this and would certainly appreciate to help you out.
You should also frequent cord blood baking sites themselves. You never know if the discount you are looking for can easily be found on these websites. This way you would no longer need to find them elsewhere. You can also ask for more information then and there since the CBR discount is presented on the cord blood banking website.
You just need to remember to do your own research when it comes to considering various cord blood banking facilities. You might want to seriously consider your choices by getting some reviews and feedbacks about the websites you are interested with. You can find a lot of these online, from review sites and even online forums.
Even if you are going a CBR discount, you should still prepare yourself financially for the entire process. It would be costly and you will really feel the discount should help. But take time to save up for it and prepare for it so that when the time comes, no extra hassles would pop out.

Where to Get Your Cord Blood Coupon

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tom_Hanston]Tom Hanston
Getting a cord blood coupon may just be your ticket to taking advantage of the best medical plan you can ever give your child. Cord blood registry can be very expensive but with the help of a coupon, you can definitely be on your way to enjoying its benefits rather than worrying about the expenses.
This blood registry is expensive because preserving the cord blood specimen is going to be for a lifetime's worth. These transplants are known to be able to successfully treat major illnesses that affect the blood as well as the immune system. A lot of life-threatening diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, can be treated completely through the use of stem cells obtained from the cord blood specimen.
You can actually get a cheaper specimen through public banks. However, the safety of the actual specimen may not be that guaranteed. Doctors know that getting someone else's cord blood specimen may be risky in terms of getting some genetic diseases from the unknown donor.
In contrast, private sectors that facilitate cord blood banking may be more expensive because you don't only pay for the full circle that comes with getting and sustaining the specimen's life. You also get to have insurance for the sample, assuring you that your payment will be partly covered should anything happen with the specimen or the facility where it is being stored.
So it really does make a big difference when you have a blood coupon. You can begin by asking from your friends, colleagues, and loved ones if they are aware of institutions that give away such coupons. Some of them might have direct leads as they have experienced this themselves.
You can also turn to private blood banking facilities and try to ask if they have existing discounts or promos you can avail. Try checking their online website for any information regarding this. Most of them would have coupons available right on their website to attract people to come and visit their online presence. It would be best to avail the coupons right from the facility's own website so you can be sure that you are buying legitimate ones.
You can also try getting your coupons from the websites that sell them. Just make sure you do some background research regarding the said website. Groupons have become such a fad these days that's not surprising to find a blood coupon also being offered on any of these sites.
Finally, you can also your very own gynecologist if they know of any facility that offers a cord blood coupon. They might either be able to refer you to one or they might actually be part of a facility that is duly certified to perform the extraction of cord blood specimen.

What Is Telemedicine?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jamie_Simpson]Jamie Simpson
Rising healthcare costs, and limited access to doctors in some areas mean that the business of healthcare as usual does not meet everyone's needs. However, there is a healthcare concept known as telemedicine that shows promise for busy physicians, and patients who would benefit from their expertise. Telemedicine is the practice of using digital technologies like computers, smart phones and television to address healthcare issues at a distance. At the most basic level, a patient might be able to log onto a healthcare provider's website at a specific time for a follow-up appointment. By using cameras, the provider could have face-to-face contact with a patient without the patient coming into the office. Telemedicine can be used as a way to involve world renown physicians in the treatment of diseases such as cancer. A specialist can make arrangements for another physician to "sit in" on a consultation with a patient who comes to the office for care. This use of telemedicine allows a patient to get a second opinion without going from doctor to doctor.
Telehealth can have far reaching implications. It can be used locally, nationally or globally, bringing together the best minds in the healthcare industry to tackle some of the toughest cases. For example in developing countries where there are limited health care resources and practitioners, telemedicine can help extend resources. Specialists from countries with abundant healthcare resources can assist those in developing countries with diagnosis, and help identify treatment options.
In the inner city, rural areas, and remote locations where healthcare resources are limited, telemedicine can address health disparities suffered by persons with limited access to care. This includes minorities, older adults and other limited resource persons who cannot afford healthcare. Telehealth is the perfect solution for those without access to traditional services. With the help of a nurse or other health professional who has access to a laptop computer, a physician can assess a patient's progress and needs. This might include diagnosing a condition, and recommending treatment, especially when a nurse is present who can conduct a physical assessment.
Telemedicine can be used as a means to bring specialized training to medical professionals. Teaching hospitals can connect with hospitals in smaller communities. With a patient's permission, doctors and nurses can observe procedures such as surgeries.
Another application for telemedicine is in rescue operations or disasters. When it is possible to have a connection to a computer or smart phone, lives can be saved using telehealth methods. A trauma specialist can talk first responders, or others through procedures that can help stabilize a patient until he or she can get to a hospital, or other healthcare facility.
Telehealth is an option for patient education or health education. For example, in an area where there may be no resources for diabetes education, a church building or other facility can serve as a meeting place where education can be delivered to small groups or individuals.
Expect telemedicine to become more prevalent. Efforts to reform healthcare will require more cost effective ways of conducting treatment. For routine health follow-up where an extensive physical examination is not required, telemedicine is an option to keep patients connected to health resources.

How Does Prescription Drug Discount Card Work?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Paul_K_Jackson]Paul K Jackson
Who pays for the discount offered by the drug discount cards? If you have ever used a discount card or coupon at your pharmacy to save money on your medications, you are probably asking the same question. How is this possible? You normally pay $50 for your amlodipine but now with your HelpRx card or Community Assistance drug discount card, your price is now $12. Somebody must be providing this charity right? The answer is no. Prescription drug discount card is not a charity but a business practice that benefits all participating parties. To explain how this works, it will be necessary to list all the participating parties in transaction that takes place at pharmacy. First is the patient. When a medication is prescribed to a patient without prescription drug insurance, the patient is left with many dilemmas. Pay the high price of the medication and sacrifice elsewhere, skip the medications all together because of the price, or something in between like buy some of the pills and take it as needed. As a patient in chain pharmacy like CVS or Walgreens, you can't haggle on price because they don't have a provision for that. You either accept the high cash price they quote you or leave. It is that simple. But with Rx discount cards; there is a way out for both parties. Pharmacy is the next participant in the transaction. Pharmacies are in business to make money.
That is their goal. Loosing patient who can't afford their medications or not taking their medications as prescribe because of price is not good business either. So how can they offer help to people that need the help without cannibalizing their bottom line? Answer is drug discount card. So how does it work? Most of the big savings scored with drug discount cards are generally generic medications because of their large profit margin. Contrary to popular belief, prescription generic medications are cheap, dirty cheap. Drug Insurance companies pay pharmacy really low price for medication because of the volume of their patient but cash paying patients are charged extra ordinary high price. By PDM ( drug insurance company) offering this discount card, patients using the card will benefit from the cloud of many patients using the same card. In order words, it pays to stick together. Pharmacies across the country will accept this because, 1) first they are used to getting less from the PDM, 2) It is not good business to lose patient you can make profit from, even though it is not as much as what it could have been. It is a win - win situation for all the parties involved. The patient who finds and uses a drug discount gets to save money and be able to take his or her medication as prescribed by the doctor. The pharmacy makes a sale but most importantly gained a patient who will over the course of years be a repeat customer. The PDM also benefit because they are paid by the pharmacies for electronic transaction fee for transmitting claims online.
Although this might be minor, it can add up pretty fast. The PDM also benefit by having more people using their network, this will strength their hand in negotiating new contracts with pharmacy chains. Now that you know how drug discount works, how come everyone that doesn't have drug coverage is not using it? In order for pharmacies to accept these discount cards, they place certain limitations on it. First is no distribution of cards around pharmacy premises, giving out cards in the pharmacy will erase patients willing and capable of paying the full high price of the medication. Secondly, the advertisements of these cards are limited in scope. No mass media campaign like radio or TV but print ads are allowed. So with these limitations, patients that don't bother looking will continue to pay high cost while patients that really want to save money on their medication will have a choice.

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Cecilia_Mcgowan]Cecilia Mcgowan
Many people across the world have gone or are going natural. This means turning from conventional medicine and finding alternatives. Natural home remedies not only mean recipes, it means homeopathic equipment.
Alternative medicine treatments just as homeopathic remedies are varied. Some, more popular than others, but each has its unique healing agent. Mind, body and spirit are what homeopathic remedies are all about. The body is a remarkable vessel. Balancing it properly is a priority. When the body is balanced, the mind, body and soul are healthy. When the body is filled with negative consumption, it wears down.
There are many different products on the market today that are homeopathic remedies for various conditions. For example, the Philips goLITE BLU Light Therapy Device. This device is designed to create positive energy in the person. The light is a therapy that provides a natural boost and helps increases energy, and can be used even while you sleep. The eyes have receptors which convert the summer blue light into chemicals which our bodies need in order to be energetic and active. In the winter, this light is hard to come by. The goLITE provides that light and helps the person to create the positive energy that keeps them happy.
Other devices are devices such as the Light Relief Infrared Pain Relief Device. When you are suffering and in pain, being filled with prescriptions to ease the pain, takes a toll on the person suffering. Pain medications affect the attitude and over time, they too begin to wear off, and solutions must be found. Light Relief Infrared Pain Relief Device provides topical heating which relieves minor stiffness, joint pain and muscle pain. It is simply applied to the area and the area responds to the heat which used infrared energy. The unit is hand held making it very manageable.
For those that have trouble sleeping at night, there are also homeopathic remedies to help ensure a better night's sleep such as the Nightwave Sleep Assistant Nw - Sleep Assistant - Original Version. This is simply a device that eliminates the tossing and turning and helps the user to fall asleep naturally. The Nightwave silently guides the user into a pre-sleep relaxation by projecting a soft blue light into your darkened bedroom. The light slowly rises up and then falls. Understanding Your Abdominal Ultrasound Test

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kathleen_C_Dillon]Kathleen C Dillon
Your doctor made an abdominal ultrasound appointment for you, and there are several reasons why ultrasound is the exam of choice - the "gold standard." Perhaps you have pain under your ribs and you or your doctor suspect gallstones or inflammation of the pancreas. Perhaps you have Hepatitis C. Or perhaps you have pain on your lower sides (flanks) and your doctor wishes to check for kidney stones.
"Hepar" is an old Greek word for liver; "hepatitis" means liver inflammation (irritation and swelling). "Pancreatitis" means pancreatic inflammation. Ultrasound is better than x-ray, CT, or MRI to check the gallbladder, and many times the liver, pancreas, and kidneys as well.
Hepatitis C can be managed, and regular (or "serial") ultrasounds help accomplish this. You can join your health care team in protecting your health by coming to your ultrasound appointment to monitor changes in your liver and "get ahead of the game."
So, you're wondering, just what the heck IS ultrasound?
Ultrasound uses no radiation, but instead uses sound waves too high to hear (that's the "ultra" part). The technologist moves a small probe over your upper abdomen; sound waves interact with organ tissue, visually reproducing on the screen what they encounter in the body. Areas on the image appear bright or dark. These images are a depiction of the echo the ultrasound makes as it passes through your tissue harmlessly. There have been no demonstrated negative effects of ultrasound at the frequencies used in abdominal exams; your technologist has been thoroughly trained to keep you safe. The small probe does not hurt as it smoothly slides over your skin. Your technologist will have aseptic gel to put on the small surface of the probe so that it will slide easily and record the sound waves accurately. You may be asked to help by holding your breath for a few seconds to bring your liver, kidneys, gallbladder, or spleen into better view.
The liver is a very busy organ, producing bile for digestion of food, helping break down "old" red blood cells, regulating metabolism, synthesizing proteins, making hormones, and filtering out toxins. Liver, kidney, and pancreatic tissue can become damaged by illness or alcohol; an important type of damage is cirrhosis. In cirrhosis, smooth, healthy liver tissue is replaced by fibrosis (nonfunctioning fibrous tissue), scar tissue, and/or nodules. Ultrasound can show the characteristic ridged, nodular appearance of a liver with cirrhosis.
If liver tissue is damaged, it is less available to accomplish its functions throughout the body. Therefore, early detection of any change in liver texture monitors liver health. Your physician will order blood work every time you come in for your ultrasound to assess your liver's functions.
If a gallstone or gallstones are suspected, your doctor will order liver function tests, and your sonographer (ultrasound technologist) will ask you to roll to several positions and possibly stand up or sit erect, to see if the gallstones will move when you do so. Sometimes people have one very large gallstone blocking the gallbladder, whose bile storage is needed to help the liver break down fats and help with digestion; sometimes people have many tiny gallstones. Ultrasound is the best way to detect them.
Together, you and your doctor will determine how and when to plan diet, exercise, and possibly treatment to enhance your health and quality of life.
Kathleen Comalli Dillon, RDMS, specializes in radiology, medical website content and blogs, and her personal favorite, patient advocacy. If you would like to learn more about ultrasound, CT, MRI; if you are not sure about something your doctor told you; if you need to find a good physician; if you have questions about your or a family member's medical condition; or if you need help with site content or social media for your practice, please visit me at [http://www.ComalliWrites.com]http://www.ComalliWrites.com. The Rise of the Phlebotomy Training Schools

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_L_D]James L D
Blood analysis is an integral part of the medical process. As an element, the blood carries a vast resource of information about the individual and their health. Doctors rely on the quality of blood analysis and their research in order to make their diagnosis more accurately. This is one reason why phlebotomy training has become essential in many medical workplaces. As the medical world moves towards professionalism, studies in phlebotomy have gained prominence and become a very important part of the modern medical set up. This has opened up a lucrative opportunity for medical interns around the world.
Phlebotomy is the science of retrieving blood, studying and protecting the samples. Blood is a very delicate element and its quality can be affected by a wide range of factors from storage material to the atmosphere of the storage. This is why it is critically important that phlebotomists are able to determine the nature and qualities of the blood at the earliest possible time. This can prove to be the crucial element in determining the nature of the problem and its diagnosis. As the medical schools and institutes across the world are turning to this much underrated science, its importance and prominence has also grown. Many interns are turning to the help of phlebotomy schools to learn more about the processes of protecting and cultivating blood cultures.
But with the risk and importance of the blood sample, it is critical for any individual planning for a career in phlebotomy to be well trained. Drawing blood from patients, its analysis, storage are important tasks and need to be handled well. There are many phlebotomy schools offering people courses in the science and helping them understand the importance and nature of these processes. These institutes offer individuals information about the techniques to draw blood, handling medical equipments, collecting bio-hazardous waste and keeping record. There are many services across the market which offer detailed information on these processes for individuals to learn from.
There are many medical interns who opt out of these studies owing to concerns about the phlebotomist's salary. This is a misconception as many individuals across the medical world earn a decent salary through the vocation of phlebotomy. It has become the most preferred career option for many medical interns looking for a breakthrough in the industry. But this requires the students to possess a phlebotomy certification for practice. This is a mandatory requirement in many medical institutions across the world.
There are many medical institutes and services today offering phlebotomy courses and studies for students. It is important that students choose a reliable and trusted name in the industry to opt for studies in this career. There are also many websites online offering information on these topics to help students choose a successful career in this field. The internet can also help individuals choose the most reliable and affordable courses for their studies and find online help with their examinations. The right training can prove to be the beginning of a successful career in the medical world.

Dealing With the Physician Shortage

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Felix_Chesterfield]Felix Chesterfield
Health care reform is one of the nation's biggest hot button political issues right now. One cannot even bring it up in a crowded room without starting a vehement debate. Typically the reform debate falls on the pricing structure. This is typically directed at doctors, hospitals, drug companies, and the insurance providers. No doubt that the nation's crisis - and it is a crisis, health care costs are growing at a rate that will consume the entire American economy if left unchecked - needs some reform in pricing. The economic rules of supply and demand cannot be left alone when supply is limited to the number of professionals available and demand is only limited by a person's will to live...which means that it is actually infinite. However, the giant elephant in the room surrounding this debate is the supply of doctors. The United States is facing a critical shortage of qualified physicians and it projects to grow far worse in the coming years. No solution to the nation's health care will be viable unless it addresses this shortfall.
The number of new American doctors is relatively constant from year to year. The number of medical schools does not change drastically over the short term and the number of seats available in each school is pretty static. However, the overall population of the United States is growing. And, with medical research advances, so is the number of treatments available to this population. As such, each doctor has a greater workload. When demand greatly outweighs supply, simple economics dictates that this will push prices higher. In most industries, as those prices increase, demand begins to dwindle and eventually the price settles at a given point. However, with health care being an often necessary aspect to continue living, this does not occur. In fact, for many procedures, demand only falls when an individual's entire net worth is exhausted. The only long-term answer to this equation, short of socialized medicine with cost regulation (which is a direction this country is very reluctant to go), is to flood the market with supply. While that is much easier said than done, there are some steps that can be taken to close the shortage gap.
The first step is to expand the American supply. This means building more medical schools and expanding current ones. This is a very tough sell when states are struggling mightily with their own budgets. This is where they have to go to the people and lay out very clearly and as simply as possible where the citizens would see the benefits. More medical school seats = more medical professionals = greater supply = lower prices to consumers in both the short and long term. It is extremely tough to sell tax payers on any kind of a hike, but if they can see the long term economic benefit - it makes much more sense than vague promises where legislatures claim that they know what is best for their people.
Unfortunately, the physician shortage is so great that there is no way that it can be closed alone by American medical universities. A cheaper and simple solution to close this gap is to work with existing foreign schools to produce doctors that can work in the United States. There are literally hundreds of medical schools operating outside US borders with students who dream of becoming a doctor in the United States. However, most of these schools are not recognized by American boards and their graduates are ineligible to practice within the borders. By working with these medical schools to provide a US curriculum and teach towards American standards, the nation will not only be helping to increase its supply of medical professionals, but the schools themselves will be able to sell this aspect to future students - thus increasing their own demand and ability to increase funding to provide a better education still.
These ideas may not completely close the physician shortage gap, but they are steps in the right direction. One thing is for certain: if the shortage is ignored, there is no solution to health care reform that benefits anyone beyond profiteers.

Getting the Right Drugs

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sheryl_L_Szeinbach]Sheryl L Szeinbach
Community pharmacies are busy. High-traffic days include Mondays, Fridays, the first and last days of each month, and the days before and after holidays. Considering the 4 billion prescriptions dispensed each year in the United States (US), the ability of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to dispense medications efficiently and accurately is greatly appreciated.
While educational requirements for pharmacists have increased over the years, and certification programs for pharmacy technicians have greatly improved the efficiency of prescription processing; the risk for dispensing errors is always present. Results from national and international studies reveal anywhere from 4 to 8 errors for every 10,000 prescriptions processed.
To reduce the risk of dispensing errors, pharmacies have standard procedures for entering data, processing medications, and checking completed orders. Procedures include the verification of all data entered into the computer such as the drug name, strength, manufacturer, quantity, refills, insurance, directions, and dates. Patient-specific information (e.g., name, date of birth, address, and allergies) is also examined.
As data are entered into the computer, built-in screening programs provide alerts when doses of a medication may be incorrect, side effects may be an issue, or when drug interactions could occur.
Throughout the process, all drug-related information is checked using a variety of formats. Bar-code scanning is used to verify drug names, computer images are used to verify drug appearance, and national drug codes are used to verify that a drug came from the same manufacturer.
Consumers also have opportunities to help reduce the risk of medication dispensing errors. Medication profiles are created when new prescriptions are brought to the pharmacy. This is a perfect opportunity to talk to pharmacists and pharmacy staff members about any demographic characteristics that could be confused with other individuals. For example, some individuals with similar names, addresses, and patterns of medication use could be confused with other family members or relatives. Pharmacists and pharmacy staff members should be alerted if the family has twins or triplets. Individuals with similar names will be more difficult to discern as their date of birth and home address will likely be the same.
To optimize prescription processing, customers should let pharmacists and pharmacy staff members know if they visit more than one physician, have an extended family, obtain medications from multiple pharmacies, use mail-order pharmacies, or prefer medications from a certain manufacturer.
Patronizing a pharmacy or pharmacy network under the same ownership has its advantages. With access to patient profiles, prescriber information, and medication history; pharmacists can be more helpful. For example, pharmacists may need to locate medications that were called into the wrong pharmacy. Insurance coverage may change or the medication may require prior authorization. In the meantime, an emergency supply of medication is needed to get through the weekend. There could be questions about the compatibility of certain over-the-counter products with other medications. Finally, transferring medications within a network of pharmacies under the same ownership is easier.
When picking up medication, don't walk away without verifying the name and address on the package and medication containers. Make sure the number of medications in the package is correct and that any accessories (e.g., dosing spoons or syringes) needed to use or take medications are supplied. For refills, is the appearance of the medication the same as last time? If not, similar medications obtained from different manufacturers should be noted on the prescription bottle. Furthermore, verify that medications were processed correctly through an insurance plan.
These efforts will help customers, and everyone involved in medication dispensing work together to eliminate errors and improve medication safety.

Useless Medical Study

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr_Dennis_Mutell]Dr Dennis Mutell
Sometimes I honestly think the only reason some medical studies are done is to try and justify the medical communities inability to accept that the very nature of human function and biology is ALL BASED ON FOOD. This allows pharmaceutical chemists to justify altering that biology with man-made drugs. Then they want to convince you that this is somehow superior to what God designed. It makes no sense otherwise because it seems that everytime a study is published testing a "natural" substance such as a vitamin, mineral, herb or Omega 3 fats and it doesn't "perform a miracle", it is of no value. All these studies when examined are designed to prove the substance being studied won't prove to be beneficial.
Case in point. Recent news article, this also made national TV and I heard it on NPR radio: "Fish oil pills may not help memory. Omega 3 doesn't slow Alzheimers." In the case of this study, $10 million was wasted on a study designed to not show a benefit from Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. Fact: The brain by weight is 60% fat. That's what the brain is made of. Fact: 30% of the fat in a healthy brain is supposed to be DHA, which is ONE of the essential fatty acids found naturally in fish oil (a good source of Omega 3 EFAs). The other essential component of fish oil Omega 3 is EPA. This study was based on a chemically altered, refined oil which eliminated EPA and only used DHA. Stay with me on this point. Taking naturally occurring fish oil which ALWAYS has EPA and DHA and chemically altering the oil to isolate the DHA is the same as stacking up wood without nailing it together and expecting to build a house. Some places in the body DHA is the wood as in the brain and EPA is as essential as a nail. In other body tissues and functions, it is the opposite. So since DHA and EPA never exist in real biology isolated from one another and DHA and EPA always work together in biology, isolating one part is stupid. It is just plain stupid. It was designed to fail. In my opinion, on purpose. Second problem with the study - they used this totally fake oil on people already suffering from Alzheimers. So it's like throwing a bucket of water on a forest fire. $10 million and the headline says, "Omega 3 oils don't slow Alzheimers". It wasn't a "real" Omega 3.
So armed with this information, drug reps will visit doctors telling them that fish oil won't help Alzheimers patients but Aricept will. This is the most commonly prescribed drug presently used with this condition. This drug is marginally effective if at all. It can have serious side affects. But the important part is that it is a patented drug so big money is involved. Also the studies to test Aricept were designed to "prove" its' safety and effectiveness. Follow the money. You can't patent Omega 3 EFA. That is the only reason I can find for spending $10 million on this study to "prove" fish oil, which is really not fish oil, doesn't perform a miracle for people already diagnosed with Alzheimers. If DHA isolate showed any promise the drug companies would have tried to mess with the molecular structure of DHA so they could patent a drug and try and make billions of dollars on it. Either way it is a win. If they were able to develop a "drug", they win with billions in profits. Now they can try and convince the public that fish oil can't help brain function (a flat-out lie) so more people won't take fish oil, more people will develop brain disease and more doctor visits and drug sales will happen.
Once again, you can not take a single, isolated, chemically-altered substance found in nature and expect it to work. So any study of Vitamin C, Vitamin E, calcium, iron, whatever, given alone is bound to have little or no benefit. Sometimes these studies find that the person is sicker. Real food or supplements developed from whole, complete, real foods is the ONLY thing that can support brain function and all of your biology.
This is my last point because it is important on this topic and I will be writing an article on this in detail soon - DO NOT FALL VICTIM TO THE "NEW" NUTRACEUTICAL stuff. Nutraceuticals is a fancy word for trying to push large doses of isolated, chemically derived vitamins or formulations to affect health. Once again, that is in stark contrast to how human biology works and therefore, like chemical drugs, can seemingly have health restoring benefits; but in the course of time, will fail just like drugs.
