When you're looking for a doctor, make sure you choose one who specializes in a field specific to your needs. An endocrinologist will take care of patients who are suffering from a wide variety of conditions. They deal with the various glands in the body, and work to treat hormonal imbalances.
Patients who have diabetes, thyroid conditions, metabolic disorders, osteoporosis, hypertension, hormone imbalances, cholesterol or cancers of the glands may seek the services of an endocrinologist. They also treat patients who are experiencing infertility. Reproductive endocrinologists specialize in this specific area of endocrinology.
An endocrinologist is not better than an OB/GYN; they are different. The OB stands for obstetrics. An obstetrician delivers babies. GYN stands for gynecology. A gynecologist treats problems of the female reproductive system. It's easy to confuse an OB/GYN with an endocrinologist, but depending on the cause of one's infertility, a reproductive endocrinologist may be a better option. Some recommend first seeing an OB/GYN and then visiting a reproductive endocrinologist if hormones could be to blame for the infertility.
The following are four circumstances in which a reproductive endocrinologist might be better than an OB/GYN.
PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, is a condition caused by an imbalance in female hormones which may lead to menstrual problems, ovarian cysts and infertility.
Ovarian hypofunction is a condition in which patients experience problems with the function of the ovaries, including problems with hormone production.
Hypogonadism is a condition in which very few or no hormones are produced.
In vitro fertilization is often performed by an endocrinologist rather than an OB/GYN, although this can vary.
The reasons to see an endocrinologist can vary. Hormonal problems may have varying medical consequences, so it's often best to first see a primary care doctor or an OB/GYN if experiencing infertility. Some doctors may even require a referral from a primary care doctor. Treatment will vary with an endocrinologist from hormone therapy to in vitro fertilization.
Whether to see an endocrinologist will depend on the cause of the infertility. Some endocrinologists will remove fibroids, but this is more often a job left to the OB/GYN. It's always important that you see the right doctor to receive the proper treatment. The first step, however, is always to determine the cause of infertility so that the doctor knows how to proceed. Once this has been established, the individual will receive treatment determined by their OB/GYN or endocrinologist.

Various Treatment Methods for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Danica_Susan]Danica Susan
With symptoms that are vague and hard to figure out, thoracic outlet syndrome is a condition that may take some time to diagnose and treat. It would help however to be aware of this disorder as to its causes, signs and symptoms and treatment methods to help you deal with it.
Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) happens when the superior thoracic outlet is compressed. This outlet is a neurovascular bundle that passes between the anterior and middle scalenes at the base of the neck. It is more common in women, occurring between the ages 20 to 50. The most common cause of thoracic outlet syndrome is trauma, which can be sudden or repetitive. With sudden trauma, there is a fracture in the clavicles that can be caused by accidents. Repetitive trauma on the other hand happens to those who have to do certain tasks over and over again using the wrists and the arms. Those who are at risk for developing TOS are people who are in non-ergonomic postures for several hours working on computers, athletes who often have to raise their arms above, electricians, musicians and rock climbers.
The signs and symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome depend on the certain type of TOS. For neurogenic TOS, there is severe muscle wasting at the base of the thumb which is called the Gilliatt-Sumner hand. There will also be a dull pain at the neck, the shoulders and the armpits as well as numbness at the hands and the forearms. For the vascular type of TOS, the affected arm is usually paler and is cooler to touch from that of the unaffected arm. This is often accompanied by pain, numbness, a tingling sensation and absent or weak pulse. For non-specified TOS, the most common sign would be a dull pain at the neck, the armpits and the shoulders. The pain usually gets worse when you do activities, and is triggered by accidents or injuries.
For most people with thoracic outlet syndrome, the treatment will usually be through the conventional ways and there are only few who will need surgical interventions. One of the most common treatments is the use of ice and heat. Ice packs can be used to help decrease the inflammation of the injured or sore muscles. Heat on the other hand will improve the circulation on the affected areas which will also bring relief. It is also important to maintain a proper posture since poor posture can actually aggravate the signs and symptoms of TOS. Stretching is also a way of relieving TOS as long as it is done properly. This will help reduce the compression of the thoracic cavity, help decrease the impingement of the blood vessels and nerves as well as help realign the muscles, bones and ligaments that are causing TOS. Nerve gliding is also an effective treatment method for thoracic outlet syndrome. To do this, you will need extend the affected arm towards the side and tilt your head to the opposite side. You will feel a gentle pull at the affected side when you do this. If you need the help of a physical therapist in doing the said exercises, then it would be better so that he can ensure that the activities you are doing are correctly done.
Treating TOS as early as possible is very important so that it will not get worse and will lead to complications. Be aware of the different signs and symptoms so that you will be able to identify if you are suffering from thoracic outlet syndrome or not.

How to Reduce Arm Pain While Using Crutches
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tracy_Wrightt]Tracy Wrightt
Crutches are prescribed by doctors for people who have temporary injuries due to either an accident or surgery. These devices are easy to use and help people move around their home. Everyone can learn to use crutches quickly, but might have difficulty while navigating stairs. However, crutch users face many difficulties in the form of frequent arm and underarm pain due to uncomfortable crutch pads. Many crutch users are unsure of the impacts of low quality crutches or improper crutch usage. Expert orthopedics report of high pressure crutches causing crutch paralysis which occurs as a result of damaged brachial plexus nerves in the underarm.
Sometimes crutch users can reduce the pain by using their crutches properly, but often cases call for additional crutch accessories such as grip pads and underarm pads to assist in considerable reduction of arm pain.
Here are some effective ways to help you reduce the severe pain of crutches:
Adjust your crutches:
When you purchase a new crutch, first place the crutch pad in the underarm and check whether you can fit two fingers easily. If the pad presses into the underarm then shorten its length by adjusting the pin system. You should also be aware of the fact that a short crutch can cause back pain and a long crutch can cause underarm pain. You should adjust the crutch properly.
Don't press your underarms:
Always use your hands to press the hand grip during movements and don't try to use the underarms. In most cases, people use the underarms to lift the weight of the whole body which causes severe pain and nerve damages. Be sure to distribute the weight equally while using the crutch.
Make use of crutch caps:
Usually, crutch pads are made up of rubber which can be uncomfortable to the underarm. Use an additional accessory such as crutch caps which are designed using high density contoured foams and fabric covers. The crutch caps are manufactured to be similar to cushions for crutches. These caps offer comfort and pain-free mobility for the crutch users. They are available in a wide range of vivid colors and designs.
Install grip pads:
If you are unable to use the rubber grip pads, then install cushion grip pads. This additional accessory can be installed within a minute over the rubber grip pad. They offer comfort while pressing the hands and reduce the arm pain considerably.
Take rest frequently:
When you are unable to walk using crutches, don't force the body to walk. Take a short rest and start your walking process again. This helps to avoid unnecessary damages to the arms and nerves.
These safety measures can help reduce the arm and underarm pain efficiently.
Modern crutch accessories like [http://www.crutchcaps.com/Handle_Pads_Crutch_Caps_Handles_s/40.htm]grip pads and underarm pads have reduced the arm and underarm pain considerably among crutch users. Diet Restrictions for Gout - The Effects of the Foods You Eat on Your Gout
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr._Kristie_Leong_M.D.]Dr. Kristie Leong M.D.
Gout has been called the disease of kings, which is hardly surprising since it's a condition that hurts "royally." Gout frequently makes its appearance in the wee hours of the night and most commonly involves the big toe. The pain is nothing short of agony. No wonder people enthusiastically look for remedies for this chronic condition for which there is no cure. Doctors sometimes prescribe prescription medications, but some of them have serious side effects, which is why some people opt for dietary changes. Unfortunately, there are numerous gout restrictions for gout sufferers. This makes some gout victims feel like there's nothing they can eat.
Why Diet Restrictions for Gout Are Important
Gout is a condition linked with high uric acid levels in the blood. When uric acid levels are too high, uric acid deposits can form and deposit needle-like crystals in joint spaces, usually in the legs or feet. This causes the immune system to go into overdrive, leading to inflammation, swelling and pain. Reducing uric acid levels to below 6.0 can help reduce the risk of experiencing a painful gout attack.
Uric acid is produced by cells when they die, and it's also a by-product of the breakdown of foods that are high in purines. Gout sufferers usually either produce too many purines or they have problems excreting purines through their kidneys, usually the latter. That's why doctors usually recommend that people with gout limit the number of purine-rich foods they eat. Reducing the body's purine load helps to lower uric acid levels and ward off gout attacks.
Foods That Are High in Purines
Some foods are very high in purines and should be eliminated if you have gout. These "red flag" foods include organ meats, game meats, sardines, mackerel, herring, anchovies, mussels, scallops, meat stock, meat gravies, Brewer's yeast, Baker's yeast, beer, liquor and fish eggs. There are other foods that are moderately high in purines and should be eaten only in moderation. This includes most types of meat including red meat, chicken, lamb and pork, shellfish, saltwater and fresh fish, wheat germ, wheat bran, eggs, whole-grain breads, legumes and oatmeal. Most vegetables don't make the list of purine-rich foods, although spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, and peas have moderate amounts. Interestingly, purine-rich veggies don't seem to boost the risk of gout attacks like animal products do.
Many people are discouraged to find that their favorite foods contribute to their gout attacks. Even if you feel like you can live with the pain of gout, there are other compelling reasons to make dietary adjustments. Gout is linked to other health problems including hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease stroke and a condition called metabolic syndrome. Eating a gout-friendly diet can help to reduce the risk of some of these health problems too since many foods high in purines are also high in fat and calories.
Food plays a role in bringing on gout attacks in another way. Losing weight helps to lower uric acid levels and ward off gout episodes. Limiting purines in your diet, cutting back on calories if you need to lose weight and exercising can help bring down your uric acid levels and ward off the other health problems linked with gout. Eating right is not only important for preventing gout attacks but for reducing the risk of gout-related health problems as well.
The Bottom Line?
Diet restrictions for gout help to ward off gout attacks to different degrees depending on the individual. Some people still need medications even if they limit purines in their diet. So, what can you eat with gout? Fruits and veggie, low-fat dairy and vegetarian protein sources are all good options. They're particularly beneficial because of the antioxidants and natural anti-inflammatory chemicals they contain. There are even certain fruits that have shown benefits for gout sufferers, but that's a subject for a future article.
Addendum: Always talk to your doctor before treating gout through diet or medications. Only a medical professional knows your medical history and can make appropriate recommendations.

Interesting Facts About Blood Donation
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kristina_Trushyna]Kristina Trushyna
The new approach educates the country about the needs of the nation, instead of that of just one hospital or patient. The blood services cater blood donors and encourage the constant blood donation. Most importantly, the country benefits from these donations. Here are some interesting facts about blood donation.
There are basic requirements for blood donors:
Age: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has set a minimum age of 17 years old and a maximum age of 65 years of age for blood donors. Why have they set these rules? There is a need to establish a minimum age so the individual has the competence and capacity to provide correct information and consent. As well as for a maximum, to ensure the blood donation does not carry any negative effects that can increase the risks of the patient.
Weight: In order to donate blood you must have a maximum weight of 110 pounds. This was set, in order to be able to retrieve at least 450 ml of blood per individual, making it only the 12% of their blood circulation.
Fasting: It has been advised to NOT ask the donor to fast when donating blood. Instead, the approaches have been updated to make the donor more comfortable. A 16 oz glass of water is being offered as soon as one arrives, to diminish the vomiting and dizziness rates. This is also friendlier to donors.
These are 15 facts about the blood, the donors and its process to think about!
1. As often as every two seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion in the US.
2. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day, yet less than 15,000 are received.
3. The average human body carries 10 pints of blood, while the average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.
4. The most needed type of blood is O positive but only 1 person in 3 carries it.
5. The only patient that can receive any blood donation is type AB+, this makes 3.4 % of our population.
5. In case of emergency, 100 pints of blood are needed. These tend to be already in the shelves.
6. Most patients diagnosed with cancer need daily blood transfusions, during their treatments.
7. Less than 38% of the US population is eligible for blood donation due to disease or bad habits.
8. Blood cannot be made in labs, only a donor can provide.
9. Donating blood has become a safe procedure. Needles are sterilized and used only once per donation.
10. To donate blood you only need to register, provide with medical history, do a quick physical by a nurse and donate. Refreshments provided followed the procedure.
11. Blood donors are checked for blood pressure, temperature, pulse and hemoglobin levels to ensure the donation will be a successful one.
12. All tests made to the donated blood are later on reported to the donor, in case of any findings.
13. A healthy donor can donate blood every two months.
14. A healthy donor can donate platelets a maximum of 24 times a year.

Article Source: [http://EzineArticles.com/?Interesting-Facts-About-Blood-Donation&id=6633326] Interesting Facts About Blood Donation
15. All information given to the hospital when donating blood is kept confidential.
If you began donating blood at age 17 and donated every two months until your seventy-sixth birthdays, you would have donated 48 gallons of blood, potentially saving more than 1,000 lives!

Top 5 Fun Facts About the Respiratory System
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeff_Darrell]Jeff Darrell
The respiratory system is an important system in our bodies. If we are not able to breathe then our body will not receive the gas exchange in which is needed to produce oxygen therefore all of our cells, organs, and tissues will starve so to speak therefore causing our balance of homeostasis to become compromised and we start shutting down. It's like a domino effect in our body. When one organ shuts down that another organ depends on it will shut down as well and so on and so on.
There are several factors that affect our respiratory system. Some of these can be environmental effects such as the common cold and allergens. We can also create our own respiratory emergencies by the effects of smoking and smog. Smog can fall under environmental as well. Some medical conditions cause respiratory distress as well. Some of these are asthma, heart failure, pulmonary embolism, as well as chronic bronchitis and emphysema which both are caused by smoking.
Another factor that affect the respiratory system is an obstructed airway. The air way can be obstructed by many different reasons. The airway can be obstructed by a foreign object such as food or by fluids such as vomit and blood. There are several other ways an airway can be obstructed. The bottom line however is that the obstruction needs to be removed in order to make the airway patent.
Respiratory emergencies are not always due to obstructions. As we stated earlier, there are certain disorders that can cause respiratory distress as well. When an event other than an obstruction occurs, intervention methods include giving a patient rescue breaths and chest compressions and oxygen. There are many signs and symptoms to look for when assessing for respiratory distress. Dyspnea or difficulty in breathing can show itself visibly by looking at the rise and fall of the chest of a patient or their overall appearance will be blue. Other means are by checking a patients vitals as in their oxygen saturation readings and listening with a stethoscope.
Respiratory distress is a life threatening disorder and should be one of the first things corrected during a patient assessment in the pre-hospital setting. If there is a problem that is causing the respiratory distress and by fixing this problem you will in turn correct the respiratory distress the do what you can to fix this problem. In cases that you can not manage a problem that is causing the respiratory distress then you should do all you can to breathe for the patient and rapid transport the patient. If you are not CPR certified, you should contact an instructor and find out how to become certified. You may one day save a life.

Know More About Poison Ivy Treatment
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Danica_Susan]Danica Susan
Have you ever experienced a poison ivy rash? I'm sure a lot of people will agree that getting poison ivy rash is not one of the most comfortable things in the world. The way I see it, suffering from itchy skin is more uncomfortable than suffering from body pains. With body pains, you can drink pain medication and you are pain-free in a few minutes. Itching is more complicated. Some people have their very own recipes for soothing itchy skin, and in this article, we will explore them one by one. But before we go to that, let us take a brief look into poison ivy rash and how it occurs.
Poison ivy can come in two forms: a shrub and a vine. They carry with them the chemical compound, urushiol, which is responsible for the itching and the blisters. This compound will cause a series of rashes, and for some, blisters which will make you itch and scratch like crazy. Half of the human population are susceptible to developing this rash whenever they come in contact with this plant, while the other half is luckier.
Poison ivy treatment is actually very simple. Calamine lotion is the best choice and would help soothe the itching fast. This comes highly recommended by doctors since it is only topical and does not carry with it any harmful side effects. However, you have to be careful when placing it on newly healed tattoos as it may pull the ink out.
Rash, having developed from poison ivy exposure, is also called contact dermatitis. This is a form of allergic reaction that is limited to the skin alone. To treat the allergic reaction, doctors may prescribe you with antihistamine, an allergy medication. However, allergy medication usually makes people sleepy, so exercise caution when taking these. Do not drive any car or heavy machinery for these is a chance that you might fall asleep at the wheel.
There are times that calamine lotion or antihistamines are not available, so you would have to make do with home remedies. We have chosen some of the safest home remedies that will cure the itch for a while. Some doctors even recommend them.
Liberally covering the area with cooked oatmeal will stop the itching. If the rash has spread all throughout your body, you can even submerse yourself in an oatmeal bath.
Aloe Vera is another very popular choice for treatment of poison ivy rash. Aloe Vera has a cooling effect on the skin, thus stopping the itching. You have to make sure not to rub the area though. Rubbing it will cause the urushiol to spread, widening the affected area. Just pat it in.
There are a lot of other instant remedy treatments for poison ivy rash, but the best thing for you to do would be to place the affected area under cool, running water as soon as possible. Again, do not rub for the compound might spread and can also transfer to your hands. After a while, you can wash it with soap and water.
Watch out for poison ivy. As mentioned earlier, poison ivy rash is one of the most uncomfortable things in the world. The next time you get one, you now have an idea what to do. Best of luck!

Top 10 EHR Qualities to Look For
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=James_Pamplin]James Pamplin
Chiropractors have a lot of information to decipher before choosing the right electronic health records (EHR) software for their practice. Knowing the fundamental qualities in an EHR is critical to minimizing costs and maximizing productivity. After all, purchasing a chiropractic EHR system may be the most important practice decision a chiropractor will make. It's a decision that will last for many years and significantly impact the way a chiropractor manages their patients.
Today there are hundreds of software vendors to choose from in the market, each advertising very different products at very different costs. Knowing which qualities are fundamental is critical to purchasing the right EHR system for your practice. In an effort assist in the buying decision, a list of the top ten critical features to look for in an EHR below.
Top 10 EHR qualities:
1) Government certification status - Most providers are aware of the government's $44,000 incentive program for providers who adopt certified EHR systems. What chiropractors may not know is there are two certification status' for EHR systems, modular and complete. Only completely certified systems will qualify for the incentive money. Additionally, some EHR companies may have used other software systems in order to satisfy their certification status. Bottom line: make sure the EHR is completely certified system and doesn't require other software.
2) Specificity- Chiropractors are unique health care professionals. As such, EHR systems should be designed from the ground up using the direct input of a practicing chiropractor. Systems that have been designed for general practitioners and later retrofitted for chiropractors will simply be less functional. Buyers should ask the EHR system was designed by a practicing chiropractor.
3) Connectivity- In today's digital world, many offices are using some form of software scheduling, billing, accounting, statistics, and/or marketing. Having multiple programs for each of these functions is redundant, inefficient and costly. An EHR should incorporates these functions into a single practice management system will be more stable and efficient. For example, when daily notes are completed, the diagnosis, treatments and charges should automatically post to the patients accounts and insurance claims.
4) Usability- It's hard enough that a doctor needs to switch from paper records to electronic, let alone learn to use a software system that manages their whole office. To ease this transition, the program needs to be intuitive and logical. A user should not have to click through several windows in order to accomplish a simple task. Data should only be entered once and important information should be clearly displayed in an organized fashion.
5) Adaptability - Windows is still the most popular operating system but more apple users are growing in popularity. Having an EHR that is compatible with both operating systems will allow you more flexibility. Tablet PC's have proven to be more efficient and are the main reason for their growing trend. Having a rel=nofollow chiropractic software system that is graphically driven for touch screens interfaces will allow you to be more efficient.
6) Customizable- It's important to use a program that generally follows accepted standards of care. However, it is equally important to have a system that can be tailored to the doctor's unique ways of practicing. An EHR program that restricts the way a doctor diagnosis', treats and manages their patients will only increase frustration, usability and liability.
7) Reliable support - Converting to an EHR is one of the most complex tasks chiropractors will face in practice. Therefore, chiropractors should accept nothing less than a personalized support plan that is easy to access. Phone support is essential along with the ability to have technicians remotely access the computer's desktop.
8) Program speed- As more patients are added to the program's database, the speed will inevitably decrease. This can be minimized if the coding for software program has been done efficiently and properly. When going through a EHR demonstration, buyers should ask to see if there are at least 1000 patient records in the database. Under this condition, you should not have to wait more than 1-2 seconds for access to critical areas like billing and documentation.
9) Networking- A typical chiropractor will be using a treatment room with a receptionist at the front desk. Local networking allows both doctor and staff to have simultaneous access to patient data in each room. As Tablet PC's become more popular, data needs to be accessed quickly through a basic wireless connection. If there are multiple clinics, then data needs to be exchanged seamlessly between those clinics through a basic broadband internet connection.
10) Cost- The right EHR system will provide multiple returns on your investment. Nonetheless, you shouldn't have to mortgage your house in order to pay for the right system. Most quality EHR systems range between $1000.00 to $10,000.00 depending their functionality. If you are investing in a higher cost system, ask what payment options are available and if there are special discounts.
The health care environment is evolving at lightning speed and EHR technology is at the forefront of this change. EHR's have been proven to be more efficient, accurate and secure than paper records. The right EHR system will increase productivity and improve patient care. However, don't settle for the most popular, the most flashy or the least expensive system on the market. Take your time and use this list as a starting point when analyzing all of your options, and find the best fit for you and your office.

Glaucoma and Alternative Treatment
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ziah_Jolley]Ziah Jolley
Glaucoma is an interesting disorder that happens to affect the eyes. It has multiple subtypes, none of them being very pleasant for those afflicted. There is very little one can do with Glaucoma unless it is caught within its 'infant stage', which happens to be rather difficult for most people. However, there is a substance out there that has proven to greatly reduce the stresses of the disorder: Marijuana.
Glaucoma has two different categories that it falls into, each with a plethora of other categories for themselves. Firstly, there's Closed-Angle Glaucoma. With Closed-Angle Glaucoma the vision loss is rather quick, with some pain. When a patient has Closed-Angle Glaucoma however, they usually seek out treatment before the nerve is totally destroyed due to the discomfort. Secondly, there's Open-Angle Glaucoma. With Open-Angle Glaucoma, the disorder progresses slowly. Unfortunately with Open-Angle Glaucoma, it's hard to tell until it's often too late as the loss of vision is very gradual, and by the time help is sought after the damage is irreparable. Thanks to Open-Angle Glaucoma being the prevalent of the two, it has been dubbed the 'Silent Thief of Sight.' It currently affects one in 200 people under the age of 50, and one in 10 over the age of 80. There is no current cure for Glaucoma, the best we can do is slow the progression, and Medical Marijuana has been proven to do just this.
There are a few different symptoms associated with Glaucoma. The most common symptom that occurs is pressure in the eye. This doesn't occur in everyone. In fact, there's people who have no pressure and suffer from high nerve damage, while at the same time there's people who have high pressure and suffer very little nerve damage. The pressure varies from person to person and how persistent the condition is. Most people report pain at some point, but not everyone is subjected to it. The thing to note is that the moment these symptoms show up, there is no way to repair the damage. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness around the world, just falling behind cataracts.
There are quite a few treatment methods out there for all types of Glaucoma. The one we're going to focus on is Marijuana. Marijuana has many names: Reefer, Ganja, Green, Grass, Hash, Hemp, Cannabis, and Herb. That's just to name a few! As I've said, there is no cure for Glaucoma. However, application of marijuana has proven to be beneficial for those that regular prescriptions do not work effectively for. For those that have had little to no luck with the prescriptions, marijuana can reduce intraocular pressure by up to 25%. Unlike most of the prescriptions which only last for a couple hours at a time, marijuana can last for 3-10 depending on how it is used. Studies show that the only way a cannabis preparation hasn't shown signs of any help is when applied topically. If applied through smoking, ingesting, or intravenously, it has shown remarkable benefit in reduction of pain and pressure.
Glaucoma is a potentially debilitating condition depending on age, and progression. However, with the application of marijuana, people have been able to slow the progress enough to live a comfortable life. Most people with Glaucoma do get relief by using Medical Marijuana. If you feel that prescriptions have no longer met your needs, or if you are afraid of the dangerous side effects associated with pharmaceutical drugs, we encourage you to consult a Medical Marijuana physician to see if this treatment may give you some relief.

Medication Management With An Automatic Pill Dispenser - 4 Tips
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Selina_Foos]Selina Foos
With advanced technology, medication is in abundance and it's no surprise that many of us today have got a whole lot of pills to take. There are medications for illnesses, health supplements and vitamins. On a daily basis, millions of the human populations are consuming so many pills, especially the elderly and those who are living with lifelong diseases.
With this, it can safely be said that many people tend to forget to take their medication or occasional forget that they have already taken it and double the dosage. To prevent this from happening to yourself or your loved ones, there are a few ways to handle medication management.
Why get an automatic pill dispenser as part of your medication management?
1. Alarm
First, there is the automatic pill dispenser with a built-in alarm. It's a great way to remind patients to take their medicines on time and in the right amount as well. the basic automatic pill dispenser comes with 28 compartments and several different alarms which are adjustable based on the number of dosages which needs to be taken in a day.
2. Many different compartments
The 28 compartment dispenser can be used 4 times a day for a week or 2 times a day for two weeks. How you use it should completely depend on the dosage recommended by the doctor. The alarm system is a great way to manage your medication as it will ring whenever it's time for the user to take their pills. The alarm will ring continuously for an hour and will only shut off when the pills are removed from the compartments.
3. Auto lock
If they aren't after an hour, the compartment will move and the dosage will go to the back and it will no longer be accessible. The night ring would be for the following dosage. The alarm system usually comes with different types of tones for you to choose from and all the products have got a lighting system which will blink along with the alarm.
4. Right labelling
Besides the pill dispenser, there is also the regular and much simpler pill organizer. It's basically just a plastic box that has got compartments with labels to indicate the days of the week. There are the one dose a day box right up to the six doses a day box. The ones that have got several doses a day, have got the time labeled on the box along with the day as well.
This feature is great because you are able to separate your medication and know which compartment to take at any time of the day. What's great about the pill organizer is that when you're leaving home be it to the office, outstation or even overseas, you don't have to lug around all those pill bottles and packets.
Instead, you can invest in a weekly or monthly pill organizer, fill it up and tuck it away in your bag. It's very handy as it's lightweight and can be taken anywhere. In addition to that, each compartment has got a separate lid so the medication doesn't get mixed up and they don't spill out when you're emptying a compartment. Medication management couldn't get easier, so scout your options and see which works best for you. These products aren't just purchases, but great investments.

The Proper Use of Antibiotics
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr_Edilia_Glenski]Dr Edilia Glenski
The word antibiotic means "against life" and these medications are intended to be used to get rid of the bacterial form of life. Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses.
The proper way to ensure that the bacteria is totally eliminated is summarized here:
1. Take your temperature before your first dose of antibiotic. Get a piece of paper or notebook to track the date, time and temperature.
2. Take your temperature again 1 hour and 6 hours after your first dose. Write these down.
3. Take your temperature again 1 hour after each dose and write these readings down (again with date, time and temperature.)
3. If after 24 hours your temperature has not dropped to 97F or below, call us and let your prescribing doctor know. Your antibiotic will need to either be changed or the dosage increased depending on what your temperature has been doing.
4. Be sure that you continue to track your temperature. You will continue on the antibiotic until your temperature comes back up to normal (near 98.6F) even though you are continuing the antibiotic.
5. You may need a refill on the antibiotic if the temperature is still low and you have run out of the prescription.
IMPORTANT: Do not stop taking the antibiotic until the temperature comes back up to normal, even if you feel better. If you stop too soon, all of the bacterial will not have been killed and the infection will return.
SIDE EFFECTS OF ANTIBIOTICS:
Like any other medication there can be side effects. Below are the most common side effects and what to do to relieve them.
1. Stomach upset. This can be caused because the antibiotic is killing off the good bacteria in the digestive tract along with the "bad" bacteria. The solution for this is to put the good bacteria back into your intestines by eating yogurt with live probiotic cultures. Probiotic means "supporting life." Probiotics are also available in liquid, capsule or pill form. These may also go by the name of "acidophilus" or other culture name. Continue to take these for a few weeks after you have finished your antibiotics.
2. Persistent upset stomach, despite taking probiotics, is handled by taking B2 capsules. One capsule with each meal.
3. Sore gums. This is handled by taking 1000 mg Vitamin C twice a day until the symptoms go away.
4. Depression, nightmares, lethargy. This is handled by taking 100 to 500 mg B1 twice a day, depending on severity of symptoms. Stop taking the B1 once the symptoms subside.
5. Avoid dairy products that have hormones (use organic milk and cheese only) and meat or poultry that has been given hormones or antibiotics. These can make the side effects of your medication worse. Eat organically raised animal products or "free range" animal products.
Other recommendations:
Take a good multivitamin and multi-mineral daily, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, get enough protein daily and avoid fatty or fried foods.
Following these guidelines will ensure a full recovery from your ailment.

Understanding the Side Effects and Its Prevention
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ivan_Gordon]Ivan Gordon Just like any medication, Metformin will produce fall out. But not everyone who is on Metformin therapy experiences the fall-out of the drug. As a matter of fact, some people can just tolerate using it. When effects are experienced, they are usually not severe and they may either be treated easily by your physician, or treatment will not be necessary at all.
The common Metformin have been established through series of clinical trials on people. During the clinical trials, the effects experienced by one group who is on Metformin, will be compared to the bad effects experienced by another group who is not taking the drug. Studies show that diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, gas, indigestion, abdominal discomfort, weakness, and headache, are the usual Metformin. In general, people who are taking the extended formulation of Metformin, will experience fewer of these effects.
When there are minor fall outs produced, there are also severe fall effects which may result from drug overdosing, or any health condition that can affect the efficacy of the therapy. Should these severe fall outs occur, notify your physician immediately. The following are severe side effects that may require immediate medical attention. These include, but will not only limit to:
Lactic Acidosis - symptoms include easy fatigability, muscular pain, labored breathing, abdominal pain, dizziness, cold and clammy skin, and either an irregular or slow heartbeat
Increase in blood sugar levels which produce symptoms such as increased thirst, increased urination, increased food cravings, blurring of vision, shortness of breath, fatigue, or nausea and vomiting
Decrease in blood sugar levels which produce symptoms like sweating, extreme hunger, dizziness, irritability or changes in behavior, confusion, shakiness, cold sweats, loss of coordination, or seizures
Allergic reactions which include appearance of skin rash, labored breathing, itching, or unexplained swelling and
 Chest pain
There are also other Metformin fall effects which are not commonly experienced and in clinical trials, only 1-5% of the subjects experienced the fall outs. These include taste changes, flu-like symptoms such as weakness, muscle pain, and chills, flushing, or palpitations.
You could either experience some or none of the fall effects mentioned above. Your physician will not be able to predict the side effects you are going to feel especially if you have not tried Metformin. That is why it is crucial to inform the physician of any unusual fall outs that you may have experienced while on Metformin therapy. Let your physician know, so he could do something to fix the problem immediately.

Help Your Loved One With Medication
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Matthew_G_Young]Matthew G Young
Taking medications is inconvenient and difficult for even the healthiest of us. For the elderly, this is even harder. There are a few little things that you can do to make your elderly relative's life a little bit easier. While these things can't change their condition or disability, they can make the process just a touch easier. Perhaps these things can even help them to avoid the frustration that is completely normal and justified.
If there are no children around the house, ask your pharmacist for easy open bottles. When you suffer from arthritis in your hands and fingers, opening medicine bottles is a very difficult task. Easy open bottles can eliminate the pain and anger that will stem from them simply trying to take their medicine.
Another thing you can do to help out your loved one regarding their medications is to arrange them so that they are taken at the optimal time each day. Some meds require that they are taken with food. Others make the person taking the medicine to become drowsy. If you take these at the wrong times, they can certainly make life harder. Have your pharmacist record the side effects of the meds for you and then have them organized in the most optimal way; the meds that make them sleepy should be taken at night. Be aware of how the medications are affecting your loved one. If unpleasant side effects are displayed beyond what is normal, don't hesitate to contact your relative's doctor on their behalf.
Try color coding the bottles once the meds are arranged correctly. Putting different colors on the meds in order to group which should be taken together can help eliminate the confusion that taking multiple medications might stir up. Put a red sticker on the tops of the pills to be taken in the morning, Yellow stickers for lunch time, and blue stickers for those meds that should be taken before bed. Using the rainbows colors also gives you room for taking medications in between these three times. If you have a med that is being taken multiple times throughout the day, arrange this so that the morning dosage is in a different color-coded bottle than the evening dosage. You want one bottle for each time the medication is ingested. While this results in more bottles of medications, it makes taking them at the right time much simpler.
Medications can be confusing, but with these tips, you can make finding and taking the right meds at the right times a touch easier for your loved one. The less stress associated with this, the more likely your elderly relative is to be happy. Make this aspect of their life easier and it will inevitably translate into other areas too.
